Sustainability lives in the details too
Fabric gets most of the sustainability attention, but every garment also carries inks, labels, tapes, tags and packaging. Choosing lower-impact versions of these components is one of the most accessible moves a brand can make, and one of the easiest to verify, because the alternatives are concrete rather than rhetorical.
It is also one of the few areas where a smaller brand has real leverage. Changing a fabric usually means changing a mill and a minimum. Changing an ink system, a tag stock or a packaging format is a specification decision that can be made on the next order.
Ink systems
Conventional plastisol is the industry workhorse, but lower-impact alternatives now deliver comparable results. PVC-free formulations remove PVC, phthalates and formaldehyde, the three main components of concern, while keeping a soft texture. They are biodegradable and formulated free from carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic chemicals.
Water-based and PU inks penetrate the fabric for a soft, breathable finish with a lighter build. Discharge systems replace heavy under-bases on dark garments, removing a whole layer of ink from the garment. The right question is not whether a print is sustainable, but which ink system it is and what that system is free from.
Each alternative brings production consequences worth knowing before specifying. Water-based systems behave differently on synthetics and on dark grounds than plastisol does, discharge depends on the dye in the garment being dischargeable, and some lower-impact systems need adjusted cure conditions and handling. None of these is a reason to avoid them. They are reasons to develop a strike-off on the production fabric rather than assuming a straight substitution.
Materials for trims and tags
Natural and lower-impact materials are increasingly available across the trim set: hangtags produced in sustainable fabrics and inks, kraft and recycled boards, laser-marked cork patches and tags that replace plastic badges with a natural surface. Laser marking itself avoids added inks entirely.
Labels and tapes have options too. Recycled polyester bases, organic cotton tapes and undyed or naturally coloured yarns all exist, and removing a lamination or an unnecessary coating from a component is a genuine reduction rather than a substitution. Where a component exists only out of habit, the lowest-impact version is not having it.
The coordination principle still applies. A sustainable tag stapled to a conventionally over-packaged product sends a mixed message. Right-sizing packaging and removing redundant layers is part of the same decision.
Mono-material thinking
One of the most useful ideas in trims is reducing the number of different materials in a single component. A board tag with a laminated face, a plastic seal and a metal eyelet is four material streams in an object the size of a card. The same tag in uncoated board with a cotton cord is one or two.
The same logic applies across the garment. A cotton tee with a polyester label, a nylon tape and a rubber badge is harder to handle at end of life than the same garment with trims chosen from the same family as the fabric. Perfect consistency is rarely achievable, but reducing the count is almost always possible.
This is also where a decision has a visible design consequence. Dropping a lamination changes how a tag feels and how ink sits on it. Moving from a plastic seal to a cotton cord changes the unboxing. Make the change deliberately and design around it rather than treating it as a downgrade.
Packaging and shipping
Packaging is usually the largest volume of material a brand ships that never becomes part of the product. Right-sizing the bag or box to the folded garment removes both material and freight volume, and reviewing whether every layer earns its place often removes an item entirely.
Practical levers include recycled-content or paper-based mailers, removing individual polybags where the supply chain allows it, using a single larger bag for grouped items rather than one per unit, and cutting decorative inserts that go straight into a bin. Retail and freight requirements set some of these decisions, so agree the change with the buyer or the logistics partner before altering a packing specification.
Whatever is chosen, keep the practical function intact. Packaging that protects the garment badly creates damaged stock and returns, which is a worse outcome by any measure than the material it saved.
Where lower-impact routes have limits
Not every substitution is free. Some lower-impact ink systems have a narrower fabric window, some natural materials are less consistent in colour and thickness from batch to batch, and uncoated stocks are more vulnerable to marking in transit. These are manageable characteristics, not reasons to abandon the change, but they should be discovered at sampling rather than at bulk.
Availability and cost also vary by component and by order size, and they are confirmed per project rather than being fixed. Ask early, because a substitution that arrives after artwork approval usually means reworking something.
The most important limit is evidential. A material being natural, recycled or free from a named substance is only a claim you can make if the supplier can document it. Without documentation it is a preference, not a claim.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Which ink system is quoted: plastisol, PVC-free, water-based, PU or discharge?
- What exactly is the formulation free from?
- Can the same artwork be produced in a lower-impact system, and what changes?
- What documentation exists for material and compliance claims?
- Are natural or recycled-content options available for tags, patches and boards?
- Can this component be simplified to fewer materials without losing function?
- How is packaging minimised for shipment and retail?
- What changes at sampling if I switch systems, and what should I test?
Common mistakes
- Swapping an ink system in bulk without a strike-off on the production fabric
- Making a general environmental claim that no supplier document supports
- Choosing a recycled board too light to survive handling, and reprinting it
- Adding a sustainability tag to a pack that has more layers than it needs
- Assuming a natural material will be as consistent batch to batch as a synthetic
- Changing a packing specification without checking it with the buyer
- Treating a single component swap as a position rather than as one improvement
Honesty is the strategy
Sustainability claims should be as engineered as the product: specific, supportable and current. Claim the concrete choice that was made, such as printing with a PVC-free ink system, rather than a vague green halo. Customers and retailers increasingly know the difference, and so do regulators.
Keep the paperwork with the specification. Supplier declarations, material documentation and the version of the claim you published should live alongside the tech pack, so that a question two seasons later can be answered from a file rather than from memory.
