Sportswear Branding Guide

Sportswear branding has to stretch, recover, sit against skin and survive far more washes than most apparel. The fabric decides most of the answer before the artwork is opened.

What makes sportswear branding different

Most garment branding problems are aesthetic. Sportswear branding problems are mechanical. The panel a logo sits on elongates in wear and returns to shape again and again, it is worn directly against skin, it is soaked in sweat and it is laundered far more often than a shirt or a jacket. A finish that is perfectly sound on a cotton tee has none of those demands to answer.

The second difference is chemical. Sportswear fabric is usually synthetic, which brings its own behaviours: dyes that move under heat, low tolerance to press temperature, smooth filament surfaces that give ink little to key into, and mill-applied finishes designed to shed liquid rather than accept it.

The practical consequence is that sportswear branding is specified from the fabric outwards. Confirm the fabric list, the fabric colours and the real wash expectation first. Then choose the route. Then adapt the artwork to the route, rather than the other way round.

The fabrics you are actually decorating

A typical range covers more fabric types than the design deck suggests. Polyester interlock and single jersey for training tops. Nylon and polyester blended with elastane for leggings, shorts and compression. Open mesh for ventilation panels. Bonded and laminated fabrics on light shells. Brushed backs on cooler-weather layers. Cotton-rich jersey and loopback fleece on the lifestyle end of the same collection.

Each of those takes decoration differently. Mesh has less surface area to bond to and an open structure that a press can push ink through. Bonded fabrics can delaminate if pressed too hard or too hot. Brushed surfaces need enough build to sit on top of the pile rather than sink into it. Water-repellent and coated shells reject most conventional inks entirely and need a system engineered to anchor to them.

This is why sampling on the production fabric matters more here than in any other category. A finish approved on a plain polyester swatch tells you very little about how it behaves on a 4-way-stretch elastane knit or across a mesh insert.

Polyester, dye migration and sublimation

Polyester is coloured with disperse dyes that can move under heat. That single fact explains both the biggest risk in sportswear decoration and one of its most useful processes.

The risk is dye migration. Heat from curing or pressing can drive fabric dye up into the decoration, shifting a white print towards pink on red fabric or towards grey on navy. It frequently appears after production rather than during it, so goods can be packed and shipped before anyone sees it. Mitigation is well established: blocking under-bases, low-cure ink systems, disciplined heat management and, above all, testing the specific fabric and the specific colour before bulk. A supplier who has not asked which fabric and which shade is not managing the risk.

The same chemistry, used deliberately, gives dye sublimation. The dye is transferred into the fibre itself, so there is no film on the surface, nothing to crack and no hand-feel at all. It suits all-over graphics, gradients and photographic artwork, and it is a natural fit for cut-and-sew kit where panels are printed before assembly. Its limits are firm: it needs polyester or a polyester-rich fabric, it needs a light base because the process adds colour rather than covering it, and it cannot lay down white. Sublimated garments therefore still tend to carry a separate route for the brand mark itself, particularly on dark or blended pieces.

Which routes suit, and which fail

  • 4-way-stretch knit, high-strain panel -> silicone print or silicone heat transfer
  • Stable woven panel, compact sharp logo -> high density or a durable transfer
  • Cotton-rich training wear, large graphic -> water-based or PU for a soft build
  • Light polyester, full-colour or all-over artwork -> dye sublimation at panel stage
  • Low-light running and cycling product -> reflective print or reflective transfer
  • Waistband, hem, cuff or equipment contact -> matte silicone grip
  • Water-repellent or coated shell -> an engineered silicone system, not a standard ink
  • Large rigid blocks, heavy foil and thick vinyl across stretch panels -> avoid
  • Dense solid coverage over ventilation zones -> avoid, or break the graphic up

Grip is a function, not an ornament

Silicone earns a second job in this category. Printed onto an internal waistband tape, a hem gripper, a sock cuff, a bra band, a shoulder panel or a glove palm, it holds the garment against skin or equipment instead of letting it ride and roll. That is a functional component that happens to be brandable, and specifying it as branding alone misses half its value.

Grip specification covers pattern and coverage as much as chemistry. A continuous band, a dot field and printed lettering all hold differently, and they differ again in how much they restrict airflow. A matte silicone surface generally grips better than a gloss one, which is worth knowing when the same collection uses gloss silicone elsewhere for visual reasons.

Labels, size marks and tagless interiors

Next-to-skin product is judged by what the wearer cannot feel, and a sewn label is the classic offender. Heat-transfer size labels have become the default for exactly this reason: the same information, printed straight onto the fabric, with no sewn edge and no loose end to scratch. Stretch and non-stretch carrier systems exist, so the label can move with a compression panel instead of resisting it.

Where a sewn label is still wanted, a soft printed label on a fine base usually beats a woven one on baselayers, while woven remains the stronger choice on outer layers where comfort is not the deciding factor. Care information has to live somewhere legible whichever route is chosen, and it has to stay legible for the life of the garment.

Silicone-printed elastic gives the interior a third option. A waistband or hem tape carrying the brand mark reads as engineered rather than added, and it doubles as the grip element the garment needed anyway.

Placement conventions

The reliable placements are the ones where the fabric is calmest: left chest, centre chest, upper back, back neck, outer thigh on shorts and tights, and the outer face of a waistband. These areas move, but they do not concentrate strain the way a knee, a seat or an underarm does.

The placements to treat carefully are the contact points. Underarm and side-seam areas rub against the body and against other garments. Seat panels on leggings take sitting abrasion and the highest elongation on the garment. Waistband fold lines crease repeatedly at the same point. Bonded and taped seams cannot take even press contact, and a press that cannot make even contact will not bond evenly.

Scale should follow the size run. A chest mark drawn for XL can look oversized on XS in a fitted range, and a graphic that clears a seam on a large body can cross it on a small one. Check the artwork against the smallest and the largest size on the pattern, rather than the sample size alone.

What goes wrong

  • Approving a finish on a swatch that is not the production fabric or the production colour
  • Dye migration appearing weeks after delivery, once the goods are already in the warehouse
  • A rigid build placed across the highest-strain point of a stretch panel, cracking at the edges first
  • Sewn labels specified on next-to-skin product, then the comfort complaints that follow
  • Press temperature that glazes, shines or flattens a technical fabric while the print itself is fine
  • Crest, number and sponsor mark produced in different systems, so a kit ages unevenly
  • Grip elements designed as artwork, without deciding what they actually have to hold

What to bring to a supplier

  • The full fabric list with compositions, weights and every colour the branding lands on
  • Whether any fabric is coated, bonded, brushed or water-repellent
  • The garment stage at which decoration can be applied: panel, part-assembled or finished
  • Vector artwork with the intended finish noted per element, not a flat image
  • Placement drawings against the smallest and largest sizes in the run
  • Where grip is required, and what it needs to hold
  • The real laundering pattern the garment will see, in the wearer's hands not the lab's
  • Whether names, numbers or late personalisation are part of the programme

The takeaway

Specify sportswear branding from the fabric outwards: silicone where the panel stretches, rigid builds only where it holds still, sublimation only on light polyester, and a migration test on the actual fabric and shade before bulk.
