A category that spans apparel and equipment
Most apparel categories brand one kind of product. This one brands two. On the apparel side there are breeches, riding tights, jackets, base layers, gloves and outerwear, all of which behave like technical sportswear with an unusual abrasion pattern. On the equipment side there are rugs, saddle pads, bandages, boots, headcollars and bags, which behave more like outdoor gear and industrial textiles than like clothing.
A brand operating across both usually wants one visual language on all of it, which is where the difficulty starts. A silicone print that is ideal on a stretch breech panel is not the right answer on a heavyweight waterproof turnout rug, and a welded badge that suits the rug is far too rigid for the breech. Keeping the mark coherent across the two means matching colour and shape across different construction routes rather than using the same route everywhere.
What riding does to a garment
Riding applies a specific and repetitive abrasion pattern. The seat and inner thigh are in constant contact with the saddle. The inner knee and calf contact the saddle flap and the horse. The lower leg sits inside a boot or a chap, which rubs it from the outside. The garment is stretched at the hip, knee and seat through the whole range of movement and then held under load.
That means the two things a rider's garment most needs from its surface, grip and abrasion resistance, are needed in exactly the places where decoration survives worst. Anything applied to the seat or inner leg is being sanded by leather every time the garment is worn.
These are also technical fabrics. Breeches and riding tights are typically polyester or nylon with high elastane content, sometimes with a bonded or coated face, and the same dye migration and heat sensitivity considerations that govern sportswear apply here in full. Test the actual fabric and the actual shade before bulk.
Silicone grip on seat and inner leg
Full seat and knee patch grip is the defining technical feature of the category, and silicone is the material that does it. Printed onto the seat panel, the inner thigh or the knee area, a frictional silicone surface holds the rider against the saddle without adding a separate sewn-on panel, and it stretches and recovers with the fabric underneath rather than fighting it.
Grip is specified by more than chemistry. Coverage pattern decides how it behaves: a continuous field holds hardest and breathes least, while a dotted, textured or broken pattern trades some hold for airflow and flexibility. Surface finish matters in the same way it does in sportswear, with matte silicone generally holding better than gloss. Build height affects both the hold and how the panel feels against the leg.
The design decision behind all of it is how much grip the rider actually wants. A surface that feels secure to one rider feels locked in place to another, and disciplines differ. Take that decision with the brand's own riders, on real samples.
Grip patterns are applied to cut panels before assembly, so the layout is drawn against the pattern piece rather than the finished garment. Branding is often built into the grip itself, as long as the mark is drawn to grip as well as it reads.
Rugs, pads and equipment
Equipment uses a different set of materials entirely: coated and laminated waterproof shells and ripstop on turnout rugs, quilted and fleece constructions on stable rugs and coolers, quilted cotton and synthetic faces on saddle pads, neoprene and moulded materials on boots and bandages, and webbing on headcollars and straps.
Two properties dominate. Many of these surfaces are coated or laminated, which rules out most printing. And almost all of them are cleaned aggressively: hosed, scrubbed, machine washed at scale, or in the case of professional yards sent out for cleaning in volume.
Welded and moulded components are the natural answer. A TPU welded patch bonds to a coated shell without needle holes through a waterproof layer, which matters on turnout rugs where every perforation is a potential leak. Rubber badges give a sealed, wipeable surface that stays legible when the rest of the rug is filthy. Woven labels and webbing branding handle the softer goods.
Which routes suit, and which fail
- Seat, inner thigh and knee panels -> frictional silicone grip, matte, applied at panel stage
- Brand marks on stretch breeches and tights -> silicone print or transfer
- Coated and laminated outerwear -> TPU welded patches or an engineered silicone system
- Turnout rugs and waterproof shells -> welded components, avoiding stitched perforations

- Fine detailed prints on the seat or inner leg -> avoid, saddle abrasion removes them
- Adhesive-only badges on equipment that is hosed and scrubbed -> avoid
Reflective for road visibility
Riding on roads and exercising in low light are ordinary parts of this category, and reflective material is used across both apparel and equipment for that reason. Retroreflective systems return light back towards its source, which is why they read strongly to an approaching driver's headlights and much less strongly in ambient daylight.
That behaviour has design consequences. Reflective print and film usually appear grey or silver in daylight, so the daylight look has to be approved separately from the night look. Placement should favour the parts of the horse and rider that move, because movement is what makes a reflective element register as a living thing rather than a roadside object. And reflective only works facing the light source, so one mark on one panel does far less than a distributed set.
This guide makes no claim about visibility standards. Where a product is sold as high-visibility equipment, the applicable requirements and any certification are the brand's responsibility, established with the garment or equipment manufacturer, and the branding then has to be specified to suit whatever that requires in position, area and material.
Placement conventions
On apparel, the reliable brand placements sit outside the abrasion zone: the outer thigh, the lower outer leg above the boot line, the waistband, the back yoke, and the shoulder and chest on outerwear. The seat and inner leg carry grip rather than brand marks, unless the mark is engineered as part of the grip pattern.
The boot line deserves specific attention. A mark placed on the lower leg can end up permanently hidden inside a tall boot or a chap, or worse, sitting exactly at the top edge where it is abraded every ride. Check the placement against the boots the customer actually wears, not against a flat pattern.
Equipment has its own conventions. Rugs carry branding on the shoulder panel and the hindquarter, where it is visible in profile, plus a small mark near the chest strap. Saddle pads are branded at the rear corner, clear of the girth line. Boots and bandages take a small badge on the outer face, and headcollars carry branding on the cheek piece.
One rule applies across everything: keep branding out of the areas where tack, straps and girths bear down. A badge under a girth or under a saddle flap abrades quickly and can be uncomfortable for the horse, which is a reason to move it that has nothing to do with the branding.
What goes wrong
- Brand marks placed on the seat or inner thigh, then abraded away by the saddle
- Stitched badges applied to a waterproof turnout rug, perforating the coated layer
- Rug branding drawn at garment scale, so it cannot be read across a yard
- Reflective approved for its night appearance without anyone approving the daylight grey

- Vector artwork at the actual finished size for each product type, including rug scale
- Boot and chap heights the range is designed around
- How the equipment is cleaned, and at what scale, in a yard not at home
- Any visibility requirement your compliance owner has set for road-use product
