The short answer
Choose matte when the mark should feel like part of a technical garment: quiet, dry to the touch, forgiving of scuffs, and easy to photograph without hotspots. Choose gloss when the mark should look like a moulded badge: reflective, saturated, visually harder, and clearly separate from the fabric.
The decision is largely aesthetic, but it has practical consequences for grip, for soiling and for how the finish photographs, so it is worth settling early rather than at strike-off approval.
What actually changes
Both finishes come from the same family of cured elastomers. The difference is in the surface. A matte system carries matting agents that scatter light at the surface, producing a low-sheen, slightly textured film. A gloss system cures to a smooth, unbroken surface that reflects light directly.
Because the bulk of the film is the same, the mechanical behaviour is broadly similar: both stretch and recover, both bond well to synthetics, both can be built in single or multiple heights. What differs is everything happening in the top fraction of the film, which is also everything the customer touches and sees.
Grip, hand-feel and soiling
Matte silicone tends to feel drier and slightly tackier under the finger, which is useful where the print doubles as a functional grip: waistband interiors, hem tapes, glove palms, saddle-contact areas. Gloss silicone feels slicker, which is fine for decoration but less useful where the finish is meant to hold.
Soiling behaves the opposite way round. A gloss surface wipes clean easily but shows fingerprints, oils and scuffs immediately, particularly in black. A matte surface hides marks visually but can hold soil in its micro-texture on light colours, which becomes visible on pale garments over a long wear life.
Neither of these is a defect. They are predictable characteristics that should shape colour and placement choices rather than trigger a change of system after production.
How colour reads
Gloss deepens colour. The same pigment loading looks richer and darker in gloss than in matte, because a smooth surface returns more saturated light. Blacks look properly black, and brights look punchy.
Matte lifts and softens colour. Blacks read as charcoal, brights read as slightly chalky, and pastels read cleanly. Some brands use matte deliberately on tonal work, where the logo sits in the same colour family as the garment and the only separation is texture.
Approve colour in the finish you intend to produce. A gloss strike-off is not a reliable colour reference for a matte production run, and the reverse is equally true. This catches out more programmes than any other single detail in silicone work.

Production and artwork considerations
Mixing the two finishes in one design is a strong technique and a common one: a matte body with gloss detail, or gloss lettering on a matte plate. It requires an extra build stage and careful registration, so raise it at development rather than as a late change.
Fine detail behaves slightly differently between the two. Gloss holds a crisper visual edge because the reflection defines the outline. Matte can make very thin strokes look softer than they measure, so thin elements sometimes need marginally more weight in a matte build.
Neither finish is a substitute for correct fabric preparation. Residual softeners and repellent finishes affect adhesion regardless of surface sheen, so the fabric assessment stays the same for both.

- Approving a gloss sample and specifying matte in bulk without a fresh colour approval
- Choosing gloss black on a garment that will be handled constantly in store
- Assuming matte means lower durability, when the difference is surface, not bond
- Specifying matte for a grip function without testing the actual contact behaviour
- Photographing gloss product under hard direct lighting and losing the artwork to glare
- Requesting a matte and gloss combination late, after the build has been engineered
