The short answer
Reflective branding uses a layer of glass microspheres or a microprismatic film that returns light back along the path it arrived from. That is why a reflective logo appears dull grey in ambient daylight and bright silver in a car headlight or a camera flash.
It comes in three practical formats for apparel: a reflective print applied like any other screen ink, a reflective heat transfer built as a component and pressed on, and a reflective tape or binding sewn into the garment. Which one you use depends on whether the requirement is decorative, functional, or a mix of the two.
How it physically works
In a glass-bead system, thousands of tiny transparent spheres sit on a reflective backing. Light entering a sphere is bent, bounced off the backing and bent again on the way out, leaving roughly along the direction it came in. Retroreflection is directional in that sense, which is why a reflective mark is spectacular to a driver and unremarkable to someone standing beside you.
Microprismatic films use precisely formed corner-cube structures instead of beads. They generally return more light and hold a sharper appearance, and they are more common in tape and film formats than in printed ones.
The beads or prisms have to sit at the surface to work. Anything that covers them, including a topcoat, an over-print or heavy soiling, reduces the effect. That is the single most useful fact to remember when designing with reflective.
The formats and what they suit
Reflective screen inks put beads into a printable medium. They suit large graphics, all-over patterns and subtle tonal work where the daylight appearance is deliberately quiet. Brightness is generally lower than a film, because the bead coverage in a printed layer is less dense.
Reflective transfers are engineered off-garment and pressed on. They give a stronger, more uniform return, hold fine detail and can be combined in one build with silicone, high density or coloured layers. This is the usual route for a logo that must read clearly at distance.
Reflective tapes and bindings are sewn or bonded, and this is the format most often specified where visibility is a genuine functional requirement. Where visibility is a regulated safety matter, the specification should come from the relevant standard and the brand's own compliance team, not from a decoration supplier.
Rainbow and coloured reflective
Standard reflective returns a silver-white light. Coloured reflective systems tint the return, giving a coloured glow at the cost of some brightness, because the tint absorbs part of the light on the way in and on the way out.
Rainbow reflective returns a spectrum rather than a single colour, and it has become a fashion cue more than a visibility one. It reads as an almost neutral grey in daylight and breaks into colour under a flash, which makes it effective on product that gets photographed a lot.
Treat coloured and rainbow variants as decorative first. If a garment also has to meet a visibility requirement, that requirement should be carried by a separate, correctly specified element.
Placement, fabric and garment considerations
For actual visibility, placement matters more than area. Marks on moving parts of the body, at the ankles, the wrists and the shoulder line, are recognised as human movement far faster than a static block on the back. Spread smaller elements around the garment rather than concentrating everything in one panel.
Reflective films are less flexible than silicone and less forgiving of heavy stretch. On four-way-stretch fabric, break large reflective areas into segments, or use a segmented or perforated construction so the mark can move with the garment.
Reflective on shells and coated fabrics needs the same fabric assessment as any other finish. Water-repellent treatments interfere with adhesion, and reflective transfers pressed onto a repellent face without preparation are a common source of early lifting.
Care, wash and honest expectations
Reflective performance degrades over a garment's life. Beads abrade, films crease, and soiling fills the surface. Household washing, tumble drying and ironing all accelerate this, and the practical wash life varies widely by system and by how the garment is treated.
Do not promise a fixed number of washes. State the general behaviour, recommend washing inside out on a gentle cycle without harsh detergents, and advise against ironing directly on the mark. Where a garment's visibility genuinely matters, its reflective element is best treated as something that dulls with use.

- Over-printing a reflective layer and burying the beads
- Putting a single large reflective block on the back and calling the garment visible
- Specifying rigid reflective film across a high-stretch panel
- Pressing reflective transfers onto an untreated water-repellent face
- Claiming a safety or standards compliance the decoration supplier cannot support
Questions to ask a supplier
- Is this a bead system or a film, and printed, transferred or sewn?
- How bright is the return compared with a plain silver reference?
- What is the daylight appearance, and can it be tinted?
- How will this behave on the stretch and the finish of my fabric?
- What wash and care wording should go on the garment?
- If a visibility standard applies, who is specifying and verifying it?
