The short answer
Textured printing is not one technique. It is a group of ink systems and process methods that each produce a specific surface, and the right question is never whether to use texture but which effect delivers the intent.
The practical families are: expanding effects such as puff, structural effects such as high density and embossing, particle effects such as glitter and crystalline, surface-character effects such as crack, suede and gel, and combination builds that stack two or more of these in one mark.
The main effect families and how they work
Crack ink is formulated to split as it cures and flexes, producing a distressed, aged surface with fabric showing through the fissures. The pattern is inherently variable, which is the point. It suits vintage and worn-in graphics, and it should be specified with the understanding that no two garments will crack identically.
Suede ink cures to a matte, slightly velvety surface with a soft hand. It is not flock. There is no pile, only a surface character, which makes it far more durable than flock while giving some of the same quiet, non-reflective quality.
Gel and glass-effect inks cure to a thick, clear or tinted glossy dome, often printed over a coloured base so the colour shows through a lens of gloss. The result reads as wet, jewel-like and dimensional.
Glitter and crystalline inks carry reflective particles. Glitter uses relatively coarse flakes suspended in a clear base. Crystalline effects use finer, more angular particles for a frosted sparkle. Particle size drives both the look and the printability, because coarse particles need open mesh and produce a rougher hand.
Structural and combination builds
Embossed print effects create relief by building or moulding the surface so the mark stands proud with defined faces. Combined with high density, this is how a printed logo can be made to read like a moulded plaque rather than a graphic.
The most interesting work usually comes from combinations: a matte base with a gel highlight, a high-density block with a glitter top, a suede body with a foil outline, a multi-height silicone build where different elements sit at different levels. These constructions carry real perceived value because they cannot be reproduced casually.
Combination builds also multiply the process steps, the registration risk and the lead time. Decide the construction at development and lock it before artwork is finalised, because changing the stack later usually means redrawing the artwork.
Where textured effects earn their place

- Heritage and vintage graphics where crack and suede suit the story
- Kidswear and character work where glitter and gel do the selling
- Denim and outerwear, where stable heavy fabric supports thick builds
- Small statement marks on otherwise plain garments
Limits to design around
Every textured effect trades detail for surface. The thicker or more particulate the ink, the coarser the minimum feature it can hold. Fine serif type, hairline rules and small halftones are the first casualties. Draw for the effect from the start.
Thick builds are also stiffer. Over a large area that means reduced drape and reduced breathability, and on stretch fabric it means cracking risk. Keep heavy texture compact, and break large shapes into elements with fabric visible between them.
Durability varies widely across the family. Suede and high density are robust. Gel and glitter are moderately robust but abrade. Crack ink is designed to fracture, so judging it against a smooth-print standard is a category error. Set the acceptance criteria per effect at sampling.
Fabric and artwork considerations
Stable, smooth, reasonably heavy fabrics support texture best. Cotton jersey, fleece, twill, canvas and denim all take thick builds well. Lightweight and very open fabrics show strike-through and cannot support the deposit.
Fabric colour interacts with the effect. Gel over a dark base looks entirely different from gel over white. Glitter reads brighter on dark. The matte character of suede is most visible in mid and dark tones. Sample on the actual garment colours, not on a neutral swatch.
In artwork, keep textured elements as closed vector shapes with a stated minimum stroke, and separate them clearly from any fine flat-printed detail. If an effect needs an under-base or a top layer, mark that on the artwork so nothing is assumed.
Common mistakes
- Using three or four effects in one design and losing the hierarchy
- Specifying texture from a reference image without identifying which ink system it is
- Applying thick builds across large panels and stiffening the garment
- Judging crack ink against a uniform-appearance standard
- Approving effects on a swatch in a colour that will not go into production
- Adding a combination build after artwork sign-off and expecting no redraw
Questions to ask a supplier
- Which specific ink system produces the effect in my reference image?
- What minimum detail will survive in that system?
- How many process stages does this construction add?
- How will the effect behave on my fabric weight, stretch and colour?
- What is a realistic acceptance standard for variation in this effect?
- Can I see a strike-off of the full build, not just the base layer?

Name the specific effect rather than the look you want, draw the artwork for it from the start, and use one textured element well instead of stacking several.
